Whether you're booking a session with friends, planning a corporate event or simply feeling curious, your first time in a go-kart might feel a bit intimidating. The helmets, the race suits, the noise of the track - it can seem a bit intense for a beginner.
But here’s the good news: go-karting is designed to be accessible for beginners. You don’t need experience, special gear, or racing talent to enjoy it. At Red Lodge Karting, we welcome first-timers every single day, and most leave with a huge grin on their face.

Is Go-Karting Difficult?
The short answer: no! If you've driven a road car or played a racing game, you’ve already got a feel for the basics.
Many people assume go-karting is only for experienced racers or thrill-seekers. In reality, it’s something that anyone, of any age or experience level, can enjoy with the right introduction.
At Red Lodge Karting, every session starts with a friendly safety briefing. You'll learn how the kart works, what the flags mean, and what to do when you hit the track. The track team (marshals) are dotted around the circuit throughout your session to help keep things safe.
Go-Karting is Easier Than You Think
You’re Fully Supported
From the moment you arrive, our staff are there to guide you. We’ll get you signed in, find the perfectly-fitted equipment for you and make sure you understand what’s happening at every step. It’s a structured experience, not a free-for-all, and it’s built around safety, comfort, and enjoyment.
The Equipment Works With You, Not Against You
Our karts are regularly maintained and designed for smooth handling. The throttle and brake pedals are easy to use, and the karts respond predictably. It's perfect for building confidence quickly. We also supply all the gear you need, including a race suit, helmet and gloves so you don’t need to bring anything special.

Top Tips for First-Time Karting
1. Dress for Comfort and Safety
You’ll be wearing a race suit over your clothes, so avoid bulky outfits. Trainers or other flat, closed-toe shoes are a must. Leave scarves, jewellery and loose accessories at home.
2. Pay Attention During the Briefing
The safety briefing isn’t just about rules, it’s packed with genuinely useful information to help you perform better and stay safe. It covers track layout, kart controls, flag meanings, and more. Don’t worry if you don’t remember everything as our marshals are happy to get you caught up on anything you missed.
3. Take Your Time on the First Few Laps
Don’t feel pressured to be quick straight away. Use your opening laps to learn the corners, figure out where to brake, and feel how the kart responds. Your pace will naturally improve as your confidence grows.
4. Smooth Driving Wins the Day
Smooth is fast. Jerky steering or slamming on the brakes can unsettle the kart. Instead, aim to brake in a straight line, steer smoothly through corners, and ease onto the throttle as you exit.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help
Whether you’re unsure about kart controls or want advice on how to take a particular corner, just ask. Our team loves helping new drivers improve and there’s no such thing as a silly question.
Relax and Enjoy It - You’re not being judged. Focus on having fun and making memories!
Common First-Time Worries (and Why You Shouldn’t Stress)

“What if I’m too slow?”
Go-karting isn’t always about being the fastest on track, the most important thing is to have fun! There’s absolutely no pressure to keep up with anyone else, you can just focus on driving comfortably at your own pace. All drivers on the track are encouraged to drive respectfully but, if you feel like a hindrance to faster drivers, you can always stick to one side of the circuit.
“What if I spin or mess up?”
It happens to everyone, even the most experienced drivers. If you spin or end up facing the wrong way, just take a moment and keep going. If you’re stuck, our marshals will help you quickly and safely. Spinning is part of the fun and part of the learning!
“What if I don’t know what I’m doing?”
That’s exactly why we’re here. You’ll receive full instructions before you even sit in a kart, and we’ll be on-hand during the session to support you. No one expects you to be perfect as it’s your first time!
“What if I’ve never driven anything before?”
A lot of our customers haven't either. You don’t need a driver's licence or experience. Our beginner-friendly setup means anyone aged 8yrs and above can enjoy go-karting, regardless of background or confidence level.
