Do You Need A Lesson Before Going Go-Karting?

One of the reasons we love go-karting, aside from how much fun it is, is how accessible it is. The great part of go-karting is that you can turn up with no prior experience and still have a wonderful time racing around the track.

In fact, you don’t even need a driving licence to get behind the wheel of a go-kart on our track in Suffolk.

This means go-karting is not only suitable for youngsters as well as adults, but that it can work as an activity for mixed-interest groups.

What do you need to know before you hit the go-kart track?

Before you start your go-karting session at one of our tracks, you’ll receive a full safety briefing. During the briefing, a friendly member of our team will make sure you have all the safety equipment you need – and that it fits properly.

We’ll provide you with a helmet and race suit to ensure you stay safe and comfortable on the track.

During the briefing, your instructor can give you an overview of how to use your go-kart if you’ve never tried the sport before. They’ll also accompany you to the pitlane, where they can help you adjust your go-kart to ensure it’s comfortable for you to drive.

Can you book go-karting lessons?

Although you don’t need a lesson to get started with go-karting, there is certainly an opportunity for you to improve your skills with a one-to-one lesson with one of our instructors.

These sessions give you dedicated time with an experienced go-kart racer, who will give you tips and advice about how to make the most of your session behind the wheel, and how to improve your driving technique.

Our bespoke one-hour training sessions can be tailored to suit your needs. That means you can have a lesson as a total novice, where you’re getting comfortable in the go-kart and learning the ropes.

Or you can book a session to focus on a specific area of your go-karting, whether that be overtaking, cornering or mastering racing lines.

What are the benefits of go-karting lessons?

For some people, the benefit of having go-karting lessons rather than throwing themselves straight into a practice session is to feel more comfortable racing around the track.

However, for others lessons can very much focus on improvement of driving techniques to help facilitate competitive racing. In fact, many of the world’s top racing drivers started out as go-kart racers in their younger days.

Motorsport UK has even developed a complete pathway for those who want to get into more serious go-karting that will take you from novice to championship contender.

While you don’t need a full UK driving licence to try go-karting, if you want to compete in club motorsport races you will need to apply for a competition licence

While there is no obligation to have a go-karting lesson before you get on the track for the first time, we know that it can make some of you feel more comfortable. Of course, if you have ambitions of a career in motorsports, go-karting lessons are a good entry point.
