If you’re intrigued by clay pigeon shooting and are considering giving it a go with some friends or family, we’ve put together a list of some of the essential information you need to consider before you book your session.
What is clay pigeon shooting?
Let’s start with the basics. Clay pigeon shooting is a popular activity that gives you an opportunity to shoot at moving targets (clays), which are fired from traps set at various points within the shooting range.
You’ll use a shotgun to shoot down the clays and you’ll know when you’ve hit one because they explode on impact. It’s a very accessible way to have a go at shooting and test your skills as a marksman.
What gun is used for clay pigeon shooting?
You’ll use a shotgun when you’re clay pigeon shooting. Most often, this will be a 12-bore gun that is known as an “over and under” shotgun. That’s because it has two barrels, set one above the other.
One of the advantages of this type of shotgun is that it has a single sighting plane, which can make it easier for beginners to aim, and this kind of shotgun is less reliant on fit than a side-by-side barrelled gun.
What should I wear to go clay pigeon shooting?
It’s best to dress in comfortable clothes that are suitable for the forecast weather on the day of your clay pigeon shooting session. Make sure you take a look at the weather conditions for Suffolk if you are travelling from outside the county to join us for a session.
Your session will last one to two hours, so make sure what you’re wearing is comfortable for that time. Bring waterproofs if rain is forecast and wear sensible, flat shoes. Trainers are fine, as are hiking boots or wellies. Expect to encounter mud, so your shoes will get dirty!
When you arrive, we’ll provide you with all the safety equipment you need. This will include ear defenders, eye protection and a shooting vest that provides padding for your shoulder.
How hard is clay pigeon shooting?
Clay pigeon is an excellent way to have a go at shooting and it’s not as hard as you might imagine. All our sessions begin with tuition from one of our Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA) qualified instructors.
During your session you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice, using what your instructor has taught you. You’ll typically get a chance to shoot around 30 clays during the hour and a half you’re at our shooting range.
How much does clay pigeon shooting in Suffolk cost?
At our Suffolk clay pigeon shooting range, we offer sessions from £68 per person. These last for an hour and a half, which includes a comprehensive safety briefing and gun handling tuition from one of our instructors.
That price also includes all the safety equipment you’ll need to try clay pigeon shooting. Please note that all participants must be aged 14 or older to book in for a clay pigeon shooting session.
